    Question

I would like to know when shooting outside at night, do I need to use the daylight filter with K40? Lack of experience here. Thanks.

    Nope.

Filter is used when shooting tungsten film in daylight.
If your shooting black and white film in daylight, use the filter to give some contrast to your film.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I'm talking about shooting "outside at night".

outdoor or indoor obviously has nothing to do with it. what matters is if there's daylight or not. is there? use the filter. is there not? don't. ;-)

If you are talking about shooting outdoors at night, lit by the moon, you will not have near enough light to shoot with K-40.

Therefore, you will have to light the scene using lights of some sort, either tungsten or HMI lights (which match daylight).

Generally, no matter what you do, for outdoor night scenes most people want them to shift a little towards the blue anyway, so you wouldn't use the filter no matter what.

The filter is just an orange filter to correct the overly blue color of sunlight. K-40 is color matched to tungsten lights.
    I hope this helps...
